The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
