Do Moisture Generators Really Help Houseplants?

The Issue
Winter can be brutal for tropical houseplants. Home heating systems transform indoor spaces into arid zones, leaving once lush calatheas with brown, crispy edges. Spraying can increase humidity, but the results are short-lived.

The Hack
An electric humidifier delivers a continuous vapor to boost humidity around your plants. All you need to refill the tank with water and let it run for a couple of hours a day, so humidity levels resemble the tropics rather than a dry indoor environment.

How It Works
Unlike water-filled dishes or misting, humidifiers offer consistent, measurable outcomes. Foliage retain more moisture through their foliage, meaning reduced strain and additional resources for growth. Theoretically, it should prevent the notorious crispy-edge syndrome entirely.

The Experiment
I tested a compact model beside my prayer plants. After two weeks, the change was visible: no new brown tips, shinier foliage and fresh growth. Downsides? Refilling the tank, cleaning to prevent mold, the quiet noise, and electricity use. Cheaper models can break quickly, and larger ones might be pricey.

The Conclusion
If you’re serious about tropical plants, a moisture generator is a worthwhile investment. It isn’t essential for resistant varieties such as sansevierias or Zamioculcas, but for sensitive types such as calatheas, it can be the difference between struggling to live and flourishing.
