As any significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
